According to the reports, the world-renowned Japanese poet Shuntaro Tanikawa (谷川俊太郎) has passed away at the age of 92.
Tanigawa is considered a representative poet in Japan. He published his first poetry book "Two Billion Light Years of Solitude" in 1952 and attracted attention with his fresh writing. He also made achievements in picture books, translations, lyrics, and TV scripts. He participates in international literary activities and has won numerous awards at home and abroad.
As a well-known poet, Tanikawa has a profound influence on the Japanese literary and art circles, including Miyuki Nakajima. In 1972, when Nakajima was still a college student, she came to Tokyo to participate in a singing competition as a representative of Hokkaido region. Tanigawa was one of the judges at the time. Tanigawa gave a test to the contestants, which was his poem "The Reason I Sing" (私が歌う理由). Nakajima was shocked after reading the poem. In the end, she declined the invitation to be a singer, although she won one prize during the competition.
Nakajima once said that Tanigawa is her favorite writer, and the two had several conversations. Nakajima, who graduated from the Department of Literature, titled her graduation thesis "Modern Poetry - Shuntaro Tanigawa -".
Tanigawa came to Taiwan to participate in the Taipei Poetry Festival in 2014. Some of his books, including the debut book "Two Billion Light Years of Loneliness", have been translated into Chinese and published in Taiwan. In addition, "The Reason I Sing", the poem that deeply influenced Nakajima, was included in one book with selected poems by Tanikawa, which is also published in Taiwan.
